BadBadNotGood

BBNG (bad bad not good) is a three piece comprised of Matt Tavares on keys, Alex Sowinski on drums and Chester Stone Hansen on bass. Theses Humber College students have been generating a lot of interest on the internet, even landing them a recent write up in LA Weekly.

Tonight at Red Light (1185 Dundas Street West, Toronto) is their debut performance and was graced with the opportunity to design the poster for the show.  I felt it was a pretty big deal, a first gig and all, and I thought it would be special to screen print the art work as a congrats gift to the band.  Its a two colour screen print inspired by 1940’s advertisements.

You can listen to their latest recordings here and more info about their debut performance can be found over at MATTGOINGHAM.COM

Poster I did for the debut performance of badbadnotgood is up on their blog. The show is tonight and it will be amazing. Looking forward to meeting the guys in the band, you know my profound love of all things teenagers.

Tall Ships

Tall ships are a Nova Scotian icon in the summer time, lined up like soldiers along the Halifax harbour for tourists to salute. The image of such a majestic vessel on the cover of my guest book (more to follow on this) was a necessity. So once the book was completed I felt it would be a waste having only pulled the burnt image once. After some minor adjustments the prints were completed consisting of four editions.  Each colour represents a certain aspects of these crafts . Bronze embodying the immortalized magnificence of the tall ship. Porcelain blue the colour of the deep ocean waters they crossed. Dusty rose for the romantic tales each vessel tells and aqua for the exotic locations these explorers discovered. I have an online store in the works, so these will be available to purchase soon!

Map of the World

I struggled for many months with gift ideas to give family and friends who’ve gone above and beyond in helping with pending nuptial planning.  It was important that it be something thoughtful and personal, so in the end decided making a print would be the best course of action.

The print is a map of the world with editions in two colour ways. WARM: pink, ocra, burnt umber and COOL: pale blue, aqua, forest green. It was a long and grueling process writing out all the countries, their capitals and major cities but satisfying at the same time learning new possible places to visit.  I was inspired by the cartography of the 1950’s, so hopefully that translates through this work. Can’t wait to see them framed!

MURDERBONER!7 & getting to know your rappers!

Murderboner! is the all exciting monthly rap night brought to you by MattGoingHam (also known as my soon to be husband) at our favourite local bar Red Light (1185 Dundas Street W in Toronto).  His next soiree is on Thursday August 11, 2011 - so if you are a fan of southern/progressive/new/obscure rap songs this is a night you should not miss.  After the first 4 installments my partner came to his matrimonial senses and asked me to take over the poster design job, so here is the latest visual installment along with the two previous gig flyers. We have been running with the theme of rap as religion, which my mother will eventually scold me for being blasphemous, which never fails to make for some humorous imagery. For you rap nerds out there try and guess the artists in each poster! (answers after the jump)

Nautiluss gets signed.

My dear friend Nautiluss was recently signed to Hemlock Recordings and ever since has been getting major play on the airwaves by some seriously heart-worthy dj’s (ie: Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson).  I was blessed with the opportunity to design the logo for this new musical venture. It is based on the diamond origami fold, the base step needed to create some of the most complicated Japanese paper sculptures. Which I like to think of as representative of Nautiluss, him being the foundation for the layered sounds he folds together to create musical structures.  The forms also create the letter “N” as well as the shapes of two sailboats.  Go twitter and FB for all the latest Nautiluss news.

Bachelorette Thank You!

This past weekend my out-of-this-world-amazing friends threw me a bachelorette party that was filled with so many out-of-this-world surprises.  The short version of the night involved a swimming pool hunt, animal prints galore, dancing, the police and queerabana grooves. A HUGE THANK YOU to all who participated for their tremendous generosity.  It was the BEST BACHELORETTE EVER!

Congratulations Maureen!

Congrats to my friend Maureen (and her team) on her (their) Gemini Award nomination for the hard work done to put together Yonge Street: Toronto Rock & Roll Stories.

Coast Toting

Finished up screen printing the wedding welcome tote bags for my guests from “away” (if you are not from Nova Scotia than you are from “away”.)  My mother did a fantastic job fabricating them, so many thanks to The MOM.  Now I just need to find some Atlantic goodies to fill them with, any suggestions?

Sunscreen -

Anyone who knows me, knows that I do not like sitting in the sun.  I will wear long sleeves any chance I get because the feeling of my exterior heating up like a bagel in a toaster makes my skin crawl…more like run, for shade or a large body of water.  It also is known that the paler the skin in Chinese culture the bigger the dowry, so that should be helpful for my mother with my wedding being weeks away - haha, i kid, sort of - truth joke? Here are some helpful visual information charts for you sun worshipers from the folks at informationisbeautiful.net .  Next time you are out shopping for suncreen I highly recommend and live by L’oreal’s Ombrelle SPF45 lotion for my body and their Face-Visage SPF60 cream for my sensitive face skin. Enjoy the summer heat and be nice to your skin, it will thank you when you’re older!

The (not at all Royal) Wedding Thank Yous

Looks like all he printing for my (not so royal) wedding is wrapping up. Spent most of the morning cutting up sheets of paper in order to obtain one hundred plus A2 sized cards. The illustration ties back in with the place cards and wedding invitation - fisherman and his mermaid bride after then marriage is what I like to think. Now that Canada Post is back up and running I can start writing up and sending out these thank you notes, so I leave you to it and am off to buy more calligraphy ink!

F*CK DANCE LET’S D*INK: Canada D’eh ed.

The fourth installment of F*CK DANCE LET’S D*INK will be jumping off on Canada Day (July 1st) at Red Light (1185 Dundas Street W, Toronto), so I thought it would be great to screen print a small run of the posters for the big occasion.  I based the image on vintage Canada Pacific posters mixed with a touch of fubar spirit.  Nothing says True North more than Canadian tuxedos (head-to-toe light wash denim) and cold beers, eh!
