Every fall the cooler weather rolls in bringing grey skies and like clock work I get that desperate yearning to be in London (England not Ontario, common’).  Bringing me deeper into my UK longing induced wallowing is British folk singer Lucy Rose, she is to my ears the English version of Feist.

BadBadNotGood

BBNG (bad bad not good) is a three piece comprised of Matt Tavares on keys, Alex Sowinski on drums and Chester Stone Hansen on bass. Theses Humber College students have been generating a lot of interest on the internet, even landing them a recent write up in LA Weekly.

Tonight at Red Light (1185 Dundas Street West, Toronto) is their debut performance and was graced with the opportunity to design the poster for the show.  I felt it was a pretty big deal, a first gig and all, and I thought it would be special to screen print the art work as a congrats gift to the band.  Its a two colour screen print inspired by 1940’s advertisements.

You can listen to their latest recordings here and more info about their debut performance can be found over at MATTGOINGHAM.COM

Poster I did for the debut performance of badbadnotgood is up on their blog. The show is tonight and it will be amazing. Looking forward to meeting the guys in the band, you know my profound love of all things teenagers.

MURDERBONER!7 & getting to know your rappers!

Murderboner! is the all exciting monthly rap night brought to you by MattGoingHam (also known as my soon to be husband) at our favourite local bar Red Light (1185 Dundas Street W in Toronto).  His next soiree is on Thursday August 11, 2011 - so if you are a fan of southern/progressive/new/obscure rap songs this is a night you should not miss.  After the first 4 installments my partner came to his matrimonial senses and asked me to take over the poster design job, so here is the latest visual installment along with the two previous gig flyers. We have been running with the theme of rap as religion, which my mother will eventually scold me for being blasphemous, which never fails to make for some humorous imagery. For you rap nerds out there try and guess the artists in each poster! (answers after the jump)

The video for their song “Fish” is a collaboration between the band Wye Oak, local Baltimore artist Katherine Fahey who the created stunning paper cuts to illustrate the song and Michael O’Leary responsible for the photography and cinematography.  The meticulous detail in this collaborative work is fantastic - if you are in a creative rut this video will definitely help pull you out.  Click here to see stills from the behind the scenes.

Are you really asking who is Arcade Fire?

Congrats to our hometown heroes Arcade Fire for winning Best Album of the Year at last nights Grammy awards show. Montreal represent! Big love to Neil Young too.

This tumblr site went up last night http://whoisarcadefire.tumblr.com/ , it is both funny and sad. The ignorance to recognize amazing music is dumbfounding.

Trans Transforming

Neil Young rounded out the 70’s with huge success, being voted Artist of the Year for 1979 by Rolling Stone Magazine and honored as Artist of the Decade by The Village Voice. Young was suddenly relevant again, the future looked bright and full of optimism. No one could foresee what transformations laid ahead on the 1980’s horizon - an album that would almost end the Shakey Deal’s career.
