BBNG (bad bad not good) is a three piece comprised of Matt Tavares on keys, Alex Sowinski on drums and Chester Stone Hansen on bass. Theses Humber College students have been generating a lot of interest on the internet, even landing them a recent write up in LA Weekly.
Tonight at Red Light (1185 Dundas Street West, Toronto) is their debut performance and was graced with the opportunity to design the poster for the show. I felt it was a pretty big deal, a first gig and all, and I thought it would be special to screen print the art work as a congrats gift to the band. Its a two colour screen print inspired by 1940’s advertisements.
You can listen to their latest recordings here and more info about their debut performance can be found over at MATTGOINGHAM.COM

Tall ships are a Nova Scotian icon in the summer time, lined up like soldiers along the Halifax harbour for tourists to salute. The image of such a majestic vessel on the cover of my guest book (more to follow on this) was a necessity. So once the book was completed I felt it would be a waste having only pulled the burnt image once. After some minor adjustments the prints were completed consisting of four editions. Each colour represents a certain aspects of these crafts . Bronze embodying the immortalized magnificence of the tall ship. Porcelain blue the colour of the deep ocean waters they crossed. Dusty rose for the romantic tales each vessel tells and aqua for the exotic locations these explorers discovered. I have an online store in the works, so these will be available to purchase soon!

I struggled for many months with gift ideas to give family and friends who’ve gone above and beyond in helping with pending nuptial planning. It was important that it be something thoughtful and personal, so in the end decided making a print would be the best course of action.
The print is a map of the world with editions in two colour ways. WARM: pink, ocra, burnt umber and COOL: pale blue, aqua, forest green. It was a long and grueling process writing out all the countries, their capitals and major cities but satisfying at the same time learning new possible places to visit. I was inspired by the cartography of the 1950’s, so hopefully that translates through this work. Can’t wait to see them framed!

Finished up screen printing the wedding welcome tote bags for my guests from “away” (if you are not from Nova Scotia than you are from “away”.) My mother did a fantastic job fabricating them, so many thanks to The MOM. Now I just need to find some Atlantic goodies to fill them with, any suggestions?

Looks like all he printing for my (not so royal) wedding is wrapping up. Spent most of the morning cutting up sheets of paper in order to obtain one hundred plus A2 sized cards. The illustration ties back in with the place cards and wedding invitation - fisherman and his mermaid bride after then marriage is what I like to think. Now that Canada Post is back up and running I can start writing up and sending out these thank you notes, so I leave you to it and am off to buy more calligraphy ink!

The fourth installment of F*CK DANCE LET’S D*INK will be jumping off on Canada Day (July 1st) at Red Light (1185 Dundas Street W, Toronto), so I thought it would be great to screen print a small run of the posters for the big occasion. I based the image on vintage Canada Pacific posters mixed with a touch of fubar spirit. Nothing says True North more than Canadian tuxedos (head-to-toe light wash denim) and cold beers, eh!

After a month filled with social events, I was finally able to get back into the swing of screen printing and banged out 50 sheets of place seating cards plus tags for the Stephanie + Matthew wedding favors. Favors will be confectioneries from Robertson’s Candy, a family run candy shop in Truro - Nova Scotia (home of the groom). Robertson’s is well known for their barley candy (only sold during the Christmas season) and chicken bones (a cylindrical pink hard candy with a chocolate filling looking much like a bone). Originally the vendor was going to provide packaging for the wedding treats but in the end felt I could design a more event appropriate label myself. The tags will look real nice tied up with navy and white bakers twine around the favor boxes.

Here are the complete Stephanie + Mathew wedding invitations and accompanying map with directions. More pics after the jump!

I spent the most part of last week cooped up screen printing my wedding invitations. It was my first time printing outside of a proper studio and I have to say I am pretty pleased with the final results. I set up a small printing station in my office, turned the bathroom into a dark room for an hour and made the shoe shelves into a make shift drying rack. If this could be my full time gig I would be living the life.
Photos of the final full assemblage tomorrow!
